Portugal and Best Wishes for the New Year! December 2023 - January 2024

 Dear Family and Friends,

A holiday note from the Vroom Family which I am writing in Lisbon, Portugal! Recently, we welcomed Anika for a week in Maureillas Las Illas, France (where Herman and I have been house sitting since October). Anika started a trip journal on Polarsteps and has a lively account of what we have been doing along with pictures. As I write this, we are anxiously awaiting Nina's arrival from the Netherlands, her flight having been delayed just over three hours. We are all looking forward to the holidays together but of course miss having Tessa and Delaney along for the adventure. They will be celebrating Christmas and the New Year with the rest of the Garfield clan.

Super quick update:
Anika - Self-employed since graduation last summer. She is working as a freelance photographer and making animated videos with voice overs in Delft, The Netherlands. She is planning a several month "destination hopping" trip which starts with heading to Greece and then Sydney, Australia in late February. She will be moving out of her student apartment in late February and storing her things with her University flat mate.

Tessa and Delaney - Got engaged this summer! They are based in Bellingham and had a fabulous three week trip to The Netherlands in October. Tessa continues to work part-time for Rusty Quill as a sound engineer and works at Creativitea pottery in Bellingham. Delaney is a volunteer firefighter and continues to take classes to help her branch into other jobs in the future. Taking care of Tikka and the Bellingham house keeps them more than busy.

Nina - In her third year studying Creative Technology at TU Twente in Enschede, The Netherlands near to the border with Germany. She lives off campus with two house mates and when she can carve out any free time, enjoys playing the piano, designing her own creative projects, drawing and games.

An Epic Bicycle Ride - La Sabine, November 25, 2020

 The morning started out cool enough for us to wear coats and gloves as we set out for what promised to be a long sunny day of bicycling. We planned to bike from the house to the nearby town of Chirivel and then take our mountain bikes up a hiking route about 9 km outside of Chirivel. The trail, La Sabine is normally a moderate climb and 10 km each way. We planned to bike/hike through the pass in a circular fashion as opposed to out and back.  Yesterday, I finally located la panaderia (bakery) and it looked as if it would be open (I could see cookies through the bars of the door). So after a cup of tea, we bicycled into Chirivel via the dry sandy riverbed (hoping to get some baked goods for breakfast). We had sandwiches packed for the long ride. 9:28 am outside the bakery and there were no signs of life. The bars were still across the doorway. Calm before the storm! December 1-3, 2020

Three days and two nights away from our home base in Chirivel found us exploring an area about an hour's drive on the other side of the mountain range we see from here. We are learning that each large valley between the mountains in this area seem to have separate weather patterns. As I sit typing this entry, the wind is literally howling with gusts of up to 68 mph! There is a cloud of rain actually horizontal to the ground. We are thankful for the wood stove that burns chunks of hardwood almond. It took most of the morning to prepare for our departure and run a couple of errands. On our way to La Piza, a nature park area, we stopped in the town of Maria to get some bread. We asked a masked mother and daughter who were walking with a purpose for directions. We were extremely lucky because they were headed to the bakery as well and it would close in just 7 minutes! April 11, 2023: We are writing this during one of the last days as chateau guardians in Normandy. At this point our plans are to head south in our trusty old camper "SAM" along the Atlantic coast, then turn inland to spend some time with our friends from last year's chateau-sit an hour from Toulouse.
