Kamperland, Zeeland to Zoelen via Rijswijk - October 22nd, 2020



 


The camper is now clean and somewhat organized. We have had a great week in Zeeland. In between wind and rain storms there were some sun breaks. We took advantage of these occasions and headed to the beach on bikes. It is a 4 km ride and after locking our bikes on the top of the dunes, it was possible to take a nice walk looking out at the Noordzee.  Today we are leaving Casa Piadosa in Zeeland and heading to pick up Anika in Rijswijk (and see her new flat) on our way to Vita's parents house in Zoelen. Zoelen is a nice area in the middle of The Netherlands with a lot of agriculture. We cannot wait to catch up with Karin and Michel who we have not seen for three years. 







It is a lot of planning, but fun too. We have an appointment in a small town near Maastricht called Cadier en Keer for work on the camper which is a white Mercedes Strata Sprinter from 1997. So far the best name idea for the camper comes from Elizabeth's father: The MSS Sabattical (Batti). We want to make sure it is in top shape for the 30 hour drive to the site of our first house sit in Chirivel, Spain. We plan to arrive around November 5th so that we can overlap for a couple of days with the current house sitters who are finally able to return to Gambia.

We made sure to toast "Happy Birthday" or "hartelijk gefeliciteerd" to Elizabeth's father tonight!

    Woo hoo! What fun! The current house sitters are from the Gambia? That's so cool. I spent two weeks there and enjoyed my time greatly. Enjoy your time zipping around and once you get to Spain :-)

    Vicarious travel! I love it, especially in the time of Covid. Thanks for letting us peak in on the fun and for letting us know how you're doing. Virtual hugs all around! Oh, we had a very nice "flight", too, recently. You'll have to ask Richard about it ;o)

 The morning started out cool enough for us to wear coats and gloves as we set out for what promised to be a long sunny day of bicycling. We planned to bike from the house to the nearby town of Chirivel and then take our mountain bikes up a hiking route about 9 km outside of Chirivel. The trail, La Sabine is normally a moderate climb and 10 km each way. We planned to bike/hike through the pass in a circular fashion as opposed to out and back.  Yesterday, I finally located la panaderia (bakery) and it looked as if it would be open (I could see cookies through the bars of the door). So after a cup of tea, we bicycled into Chirivel via the dry sandy riverbed (hoping to get some baked goods for breakfast). We had sandwiches packed for the long ride. 9:28 am outside the bakery and there were no signs of life. The bars were still across the doorway. Calm before the storm! December 1-3, 2020

Three days and two nights away from our home base in Chirivel found us exploring an area about an hour's drive on the other side of the mountain range we see from here. We are learning that each large valley between the mountains in this area seem to have separate weather patterns. As I sit typing this entry, the wind is literally howling with gusts of up to 68 mph! There is a cloud of rain actually horizontal to the ground. We are thankful for the wood stove that burns chunks of hardwood almond. It took most of the morning to prepare for our departure and run a couple of errands. On our way to La Piza, a nature park area, we stopped in the town of Maria to get some bread. We asked a masked mother and daughter who were walking with a purpose for directions. We were extremely lucky because they were headed to the bakery as well and it would close in just 7 minutes! Day 5 - Cantallops, Spain rest day, well...sort of!

  Starting with a picture of the amazing campsite we woke up in. There were two other large RV/campers at this site. This was first time we ran into other folks on the road. These travelers had escaped England in time to avoid winter and head to the sun. They had also rushed through France when they heard of the country planning to close its borders. We spoke upon our arrival from a good distance and waved them goodbye as they headed further south. They mentioned having been in this spot for 4 days! We were finally in Spain and it was a gorgeous morning. After four long driving days, we were ready for a break and time to do laundry and take a good walk.  We had a relaxing day and took a long walk on a trail that ran up, up, up, the hill behind the campsite, through dry groves of cork trees and others laden with olives.
