A speedy trip through France - Mercurey was amazing!

We only had three days to get through France because the border was scheduled to be closed to travel after the weekend. The idea was to allow residents and visitors to get home before the long lock down was put into effect. We were using an app that helps locate free parking spots for an overnight in a camper. We did not get photos from the second night in France where we parked near a small lake in a town surrounded by vineyards. The third day we arrived before dark and we lucked out with this town called Mercurey in France. It has an interesting history and is a small medieval walled town. You will notice there is nobody in the photos of Mercurey. This is actually true. The town was totally quiet with almost all the houses shuttered. It was very strange to see so few people out and about.

This sculpture is depicting the story of the "Bete" or beast of Gevaudan which took place in this area in the 1700's

Another sculpture tribute for the beast mentioned above

The school gate, no parents are allowed inside this gate during COVID

We did get to buy a fresh baguette and a pain au raisin here in the morning. Two people may enter the bakery as long as you wear masks. They only except payment with a card, no cash due to COVI

  1. What a surreal and amazing adventure Elizabeth and Herman. You have now seen Mercurey in a way that few others will! Here in Chile _all_ businesses have government approved max occupancy and masks are required _everywhere_ except when eating. Standing in line to have the privilege of buying something is the new normal - totally strange. It looks like we are addicted to shopping! Most stores have a routine where you either take your temperature, they have one of those fancy scanners and a monitor or a guard takes your temperature - that's followed up by a shot of non-optional alcohol gel and sometimes even alcohol foot carpets. You can see some fatigue setting in around this with guards becoming less vigilant, etc... But, the case count has stayed low'ish for the last 3 months, so fingers crossed. Enjoy the rest of your trip and I hope Spain is a great time! Big hugs.

    1. Oh... And, cash is no longer King. Touch-n-go debit/credit cards are about 95% of all transactions with many stores not accepting cash. For a while it cash was not allowed. Now it is again. 2020 for the win! :-)
