Day 4 travel Mercurey, France to Cantallops, Spain November 1, 2020

Today we had a long day of driving through France with the goal of arriving just over the border into the Catalonia region before dark. We were under the impression we needed to cross the border into Spain before midnight because the French travel restriction was going into place. It was very difficult to get clear answers about what was allowed and what the restrictions were. The online newspapers had some conflicting guidelines, we inquired directly to the French and Spanish Embassy and cross checked the ministry of health, internal affairs and the tourist board sites. It took days before accurate posted information was updated. So it is with this uncertainty that we felt the need to hurry through France and into Spain.

The following pictures were taken as we covered the distance from Mercurey, France to Cantallops, Spain. If you scroll all the way to the end, you can see the amazing view from our campsite that night in Cantallops.

A quick roadside stop was a beautiful garden. There are frescos inside from the Roman Bourgondian times around 600 AD, but the building was closed.

The first time I remember ever seeing a persimmon tree! We did eat a couple and they were delicious.

We saw several ancient fortresses on hills 


Crossing the border into Spain turned out not to be a problem at all! There were no police except for a group chatting together on the side of the road. All that research, preparation, extra planning for if we could not cross into Spain and we simply crossed the border around 3:30 pm!

We even had time for a walk when we arrived at our free campsite in Cantallops. The campsite was up on a hill behind a hotel/restaurant that is currently closed due to COVID restrictions. Normally the arrangement is that campers eat a meal or have a drink at the bar and then they can park for the night for free.

    Those pictures are amazing! That bridge!! Sorry France got cut a bit short, but glad to hear you made it into Spain safely! Keep the updates coming!

 It is hard to believe our time house sitting in Maureillas Las Illas is coming to an end in just a few weeks! We love this area of France. A speedy trip through France - Mercurey was amazing!

 We only had three days to get through France because the border was scheduled to be closed to travel after the weekend. The idea was to allow residents and visitors to get home before the long lock down was put into effect. We were using an app that helps locate free parking spots for an overnight in a camper. We did not get photos from the second night in France where we parked near a small lake in a town surrounded by vineyards. The third day we arrived before dark and we lucked out with this town called Mercurey in France. It has an interesting history and is a small medieval walled town. You will notice there is nobody in the photos of Mercurey. This is actually true. The town was totally quiet with almost all the houses shuttered. Kamperland, Zeeland to Zoelen via Rijswijk - October 22nd, 2020

  The camper is now clean and somewhat organized. We have had a great week in Zeeland. In between wind and rain storms there were some sun breaks. We took advantage of these occasions and headed to the beach on bikes. It is a 4 km ride and after locking our bikes on the top of the dunes, it was possible to take a nice walk looking out at the Noordzee.  Today we are leaving Casa Piadosa in Zeeland and heading to pick up Anika in Rijswijk (and see her new flat) on our way to Vita's parents house in Zoelen. Zoelen is a nice area in the middle of The Netherlands with a lot of agriculture.  We cannot wait to catch up with Karin and Michel who we have not seen for three years.   It is a lot of planning, but fun too. We have an appointment in a small town near Maastricht called Cadier en Keer for work on the camper which is a white Mercedes Strata Sprinter from 1997.
